How happy are you with your life right now? When you ask people, they give you a wide range of responses. It’s a fascinating subject to ponder, and one that many of us find difficult to answer. If we ask a group of people, “Would you like to be happier?” we get a clear, unambiguous answer. There will almost certainly be a booming ‘Yes!’ in the room.
Feeling happy is a wonderful experience. Our productivity, as well as our sentiments of self-worth and our ability to handle emotional obstacles, improves when we are happy. Happiness has a broad impact on practically every aspect of our life. When we are content in one area of life, it tends to spread to other areas as well.
Aside from the benefits to our emotional and mental health, happiness has a favorable impact on our physical health. A better heart, a more resilient immune system, and the ability to effectively manage pain are just a few of the benefits. Positive Psychology is one of the areas of psychology research that has truly focused on happiness. Positive Psychology must be distinguished from concepts such as positive mental attitude, positive thinking, and other similar methods popularized by thousands of publications. Positive Psychology is a serious, highly credible, research-based area of study.
Positive Psychology seeks to help us understand a full spectrum of emotions, both positive and negative, and how they impact our emotional and behavioural responses in different scenarios. It is a scientific method that involves understanding and researching human behaviour, emotions, thoughts, and feelings with an emphasis on positive experiences and personal strengths.
One of Positive Psychology’s core concepts is that in order to flourish, we all want to live a meaningful and rewarding life. Traditional psychological treatments, such as psychotherapy, the field’s founders believed, tend to place too much emphasis and focus on painful events and negative emotions. While Positive Psychology does not dismiss the significance of these events, it does believe that empowering people to focus on their particular strengths will help them heal more quickly.
There are four main purposes of Positive Psychology that are generally acknowledged, regardless of the sector of life to which they are applied:
1. To help an individual rise to the challenges of life, accept and understand setbacks, and overcome adversity in positive ways.
2. To engage and relate to others empathetically and positively, and build meaningful relationships.
3. To flourish and discover a sense of purpose through creative and productive pursuits.
4. To look beyond the self and uncover meaning, a sense of satisfaction, and wisdom through helping others and giving back to the community.
Happiness is difficult to explain because it is so subjective: We all have our own idea of happiness, and what causes us to feel happy varies from person to person, and over time.
Subjective Well Being (SWB) is a term used in Positive Psychology to describe happiness. This reframe of happiness allows scientists to better understand, analyze, and measure happiness for research purposes.
There are three core ways SWB is measured (Kim-Prieto, Diener, Tamir, Scollon, & Diener, 2005):
1. Happiness as an assessment of global satisfaction
2. Happiness as a measurement of satisfaction within life domains (for example, work and relationships)
3. Happiness as a recollection of emotional reactions ( Positive or Negative State Affect)
