5 Tips to Read Faster and Retain Information

5-Tips-to-Read-Faster-and-Retain-Information

Reading, like all worthwhile pursuits, is a talent that takes time to master. The more you practice, the better you’ll get. Reading should not be a competition. Setting objectives, on the other hand, can help you to make more time for reading. And the more books you read, the quicker you will be at it.

Start by breaking negative habits and then attempt new ways to improve reading efficiency and knowledge retention. Speed-reading isn’t only a way to boost your ‘words per minute,’ it also helps you gain confidence and live more purposefully. Here are 5 ways you can improve your reading:

  1. Reading quicker starts before you even begin reading. Be selective and aware of your goal. Before you pick up a book from the shelf or open a journal article, consider why you’re reading it. Why do I require this data? This pause for contemplation should ideally help you weed out all of the useless information you would have otherwise skimmed through.
  2. Make sure you don’t become too comfortable. If you need to concentrate, put on your ‘work mode’ hat and read. It won’t do to snuggle into bed with a cup of tea and a highlighter pack placed dangerously on your knee. Your speed reading environment should be a concentration chamber: sit in a quiet, distraction-free location. To avoid being disturbed by emails, colleagues, or phone calls, go to a library or another location away from your office desk.
  3. How to avoid reading every single word? Concentrate on keywords. You don’t have to read the entire line to figure out what it means. Keywords are usually longer than three letters and contain all of the information you require.
  4. Skim or scan through the text. Skimming and scanning, which involve simply looking for the most important information initially, will prepare you for what’s to follow. You won’t be slowed down by perplexing or surprising parts when you come to them in your reading because you’re already familiar with the key parts of the text.
  5. Use your finger to guide you. Because our eyes are driven to movement, your sight will follow your finger across the page. In a zig-zag pattern, move your finger quickly. This will help you read quicker by preventing you from subvocalizing every word.

Of course, remember that reading at your own pace is the best way to enjoy a book. It takes skill to approach a text strategically, read actively, and summarise well. Use a timer to see how many words (or pages) per minute you can read if you wish to increase your reading speed. As your reading speed improves, check in with yourself to make sure you’re satisfied with your comprehension.
